Right Way To Wear Surgical Mask

In times of coronavirus cases increasing every day, we all try to find ways to be prevent ourselves from infected by the virus. There are lots of rumors as to what actually works and not. Wearing surgical masks, frequent washing of hands, using hand sanitizers are some of the preventive measures that we are all known to take.

Wearing a surgical masks can help reduce the spread of viruses as they are designed to block large-particle droplets and splatter from reaching the wearer’s mouth. But how to wear the surgical mask correctly? There has been fake infomation online saying that –

When using a medical mask you’re supposed to use as follows:

  • Colored side out if you’re sick and do not want to spread your germs around.
  • White side out (this is the filter part) for when you’re not sick and you want to stop germs from getting in.

This is not true. There is ONLY ONE way to wear the surgical mask, and that is the colour side should always face out.

A 3-ply surgical mask has three layers. The outer layer (usually the coloured layer), repels water, blood and body fluids to prevent them getting to your mouth or nose. The middle layer is the filter that is designed to filter bacteria. Lastly, the inner layer that touch the skin, absorbs water, sweat and spit.

How To Wear Surgical Mask Correctly

Here is the step-by-step guide:

Step 1

Clean your hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer.

Step 2

Check and ensure that there are no obvious tears or holes in either side of the mask.

Step 3

The side of the mask that has a stiff bendable edge is the top and is meant to mold to the shape of your nose.

Step 4

The colored side of the mask is usually the front and should face away from you, while the white side touches your face.

Follow the instructions below for the type of mask you are using.

    • Face Mask with Earloops: Hold the mask by the ear loops. Place a loop around each ear.
    • Face Mask with Ties: Bring the mask to your nose level and place the ties over the crown of your head and secure with a bow.
    • Face Mask with Bands: Hold the mask in your hand with the nosepiece or top of the mask at fingertips, allowing the headbands to hang freely below hands. Bring the mask to your nose level and pull the top strap over your head so that it rests over the crown of your head. Pull the bottom strap over your head so that it rests at the nape of your neck.

Step 5

Mold or pinch the stiff edge to the shape of your nose.

Step 6

If using a face mask with ties: Then take the bottom ties, one in each hand, and secure with a bow at the nape of your neck.

Step 7

Pull the bottom of the mask over your mouth and chin.

When removing the surgical mask after use,  always avoid touching the front of the mask. The front of the mask is contaminated. Only touch the ear loops, ties or band of the mask. Once removed, dispose them in the rubbish bin.

While the best way for all of us to avoid the Coronavirus is by avoiding crowded areas and communal area. Virus can easily spread in these areas. It is also advisable to thoroughly wash your hands with soap frequently and avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Avoiding close contact with people who are sick that also reduce the chance of getting infected. Disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces will definitely help as well.
